Today’s the Day!

taxes_scrabble.jpgIf you’re like thousands of American’s who wait until the last second to do their taxes, you have a few hours left. That’s right – for most of the nation today is the day that the Grim Reaper comes your taxes are due. However, if you live in Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York, Vermont or the District of Columbia, your deadline is Tuesday, April 18.

If you have decided to wait until today to file you have a few options:

  1. Hurry up and get your return in the mail by today
  2. E-File – it’s fast and easy (most times free too!)
  3. File an extension (Form 4868) which can now be done electronically. And this year the automatic extension has been extended from 4 months to 6. It’s important to realize, however, that an extension to file does not mean an extension to pay. If you owe Uncle Sam money you’re going to have to pay up today and settle up with him later.

The IRS has a great little web page set up for procrastinating filers here. Check it out for the links to e-filing, extensions, etc.
