12 Ways to Save on Home Insurance

homeinsurance.jpgFirst off I’d like to apologize for the lack of writing lately. I’ve been spending most of my spare time helping a friend design a site for her new business. However, I’ve seen the error of my ways and promise to work harder at providing more quality content to my value readers.

So for today I wanted to bring your attention to an article I stumbled across at Insure.com which lists 12 ways you can save on your home insurance. Since I just received a notification for the renewal of my own rental insurance this article came to mind as something that might be useful to you. You can go to Insure.com to read the entire list but I wanted to talk briefly about a few of those points that I think most people neglect.

  • Improve Security and Safety: If you’re on the fence about installing a few more deadbolts or even a security system, the potential savings you could reap from your home insurance could convince you to go through with it. According to Insure.com, items such as dead bolt locks, burglar alarms, and smoke detectors can usually bring discounts of 5 percent each, depending on the company. Your insurance company may also offer a significant discount of 15 or 20 percent if you install a sophisticated home-security system. Personally I think any opportunity to save some money while at the same time protecting your family and possessions is one you should take advantage of.
  • Stop Smoking: Without getting into the obvious health risks and the money you’ll save you can also save some money on home insurance if nobody in your home smokes. This is because smoking accidents account for more than 23,000 residential fires every year!
  • Check Your Policy Annually: This is something that I believe will truly benefit you for a number of reasons. First, having an accurate listing of property and valuables on your policy will help you recover that amount in the event of a disaster. Second, having an accurate list can also help you save money on your premiums. If, for example, you decide to sell that $10,000 piece of fine art removing it from your list will save you a few dollars in premiums each month. Finally, reviewing your policy will ensure that you are aware of any changes in policy and procedures when it comes to filing a claim, any limitations, etc. Knowing about your policy will be crucial should anything happen.
