What You Should and Shouldn’t Shred

safe-depositbox.jpg I found a great link yesterday to a fairly long list of personal documents including birth certificates, credit reports, vehicle registrations, and everything in between. The list includes recommendations on what to do with each document – how long you should keep it, where you should keep it, who you should give a copy to, and when you should shred it. After reading this list I’m contemplating getting a safe deposit box (it is tax-deductible after all). Although I have a safe inside my home to protect the documents I need occasionally, I don’t have a place to put things I’ll rarely need such as lawsuit documents or photos of my belongings.

After reading this list I would challenge everyone to purchase a fire-resistant safe to keep documents that you will occsionally need. Owning a safe is just another form of insurance that is fairly inexpensive and could save you a lot of time and money should anything happen…
